Shaft Generator Retrofit — Capesize Bulk Carrier
HYDRUS undertook the entire study for the shaft generator retrofit in a Capesize bulk carrier — coordinating equipment maker and Classification Society, preparing the shipyard's retrofit specification, managing procurement of Owners' supply items, and supervising the works onsite up to sea trials.
The shaft generator is PTO/PTI and the existing shaft had to be removed and a new one constructed — a study HYDRUS also performed. The team simulated the disassembly, removal, movement and installation of the new shaft with the PTI/PTO arrangement, ensuring safe coordination of all retrofit activities under shipyard conditions while maintaining full compliance with Classification Society requirements and maker specifications.
Scope of Work
Coordinated and supervised multiple critical mechanical and marine systems refurbishment activities, including:
- Complete shaft generator retrofit study for a Capesize bulk carrier
- PTO/PTI installation requiring removal of existing shaft and construction of a new one
- 3D simulation of disassembly, removal, movement and installation of new shaft with PTI/PTO
- Technical specification preparation for the shipyard
- Full coordination with equipment maker and Classification Society
- Procurement management of all Owners' supply items
- Structural, alignment and integration studies
- System integration and interface management
- Onsite supervision, coordination and technical follow-up during shipyard execution
- Testing, commissioning and sea trials support
Our Approach
HYDRUS led the complete engineering study for the shaft generator retrofit and coordinated the entire process with the equipment maker and the Classification Society at all stages. Scope included preparation of the technical retrofit specification for the shipyard, management of procurement for all Owners' supply items, and continuous follow-up of the technical study during execution. In the shipyard, one of HYDRUS' in-house supervisors attended the vessel throughout the full duration of the project — coordinating works, monitoring progress, following up technical matters with the shipyard, and supporting the project through to testing, commissioning and sea trials. Shaft generator retrofits enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions by recovering propulsion power; precise planning and close coordination among all stakeholders ensured safe installation, full compliance and reliable performance.
