VLCC Cargo Heating Coil Retrofit
Large-scale retrofit installation of heating coils across the Cargo Oil Tanks of a VLCC tanker — over 20 km of new piping plus a new atmospheric condenser cooling system.
The retrofit addressed the complex integration of an extensive cargo heating system within an existing VLCC structure while ensuring operational safety, thermal efficiency and structural integrity. Significant engineering effort was dedicated to accurate heat-transfer analysis, detailed piping stress calculations, and the coordination of large-scale onboard modifications within highly constrained cargo tank environments.
Scope of Work
Coordinated and supervised multiple critical mechanical and marine systems refurbishment activities, including:
- Detailed thermal performance calculations
- Piping engineering across 20+ km network
- Stress & strength assessments
- Atmospheric condenser cooling system integration
- Routing optimisation for extensive piping networks
- Multidisciplinary coordination with existing systems
Our Approach
HYDRUS provided the engineering development and technical support for the heating coil retrofit — covering thermal performance, piping engineering, stress and strength assessments, routing optimisation, and integration of the new atmospheric condenser cooling system. Multidisciplinary coordination ensured compatibility with existing vessel systems and operational requirements.
